The Heartbreaker Earrings
The Heartbreaker Earrings
| Victorian Onyx Pearl Drop Earrings in 14K |
These earrings are an exquisite example of late 19th century Victorian mourning jewelry. The mourning jewelry pieces of the Georgian era were more detailed scenes of death - urns, skulls, weeping willows. But this gave way to the mourning jewelry of the Victorian era, when in the 1860's the then reigning monarch Queen Victoria, began mourning the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert. She remained in a state of mourning for the rest of her life and this translated greatly to her appearance in clothing and in jewelry, where black was choice. Dark materials like onyx, jet, and vulcanite became an appropriate but fashionable way to memorialize and mourn the loss of a loved one. These onyx earrings are so beautifully crafted that they can stand up to modern design standards with their glossy sleek appearance... and far removed from the Victorian era, they are far from macabre.
